Passion and Expression | Anne Hanley
Passion and the desire for expression motivate me to create. I have been creating, producing, selling and distributing, my Batik paintings for over 20 years, displaying my finished original pieces at art fairs and galleries across the country. I began this method of painting after I retired from my job as an Art Director to stay home and raise my daughters. While home I started a line of children’s clothes called “Go Annie Wear”. I would buy bolts of white cotton fabric and hand paint all kinds of subjects and sew dresses, tops and leggings. It expanded in multiple sizes both girls and boys. Eventually, I hired two seamstresses and for a couple of years, the business grew. After my third daughter was born I decided I would return to my love for painting.
I hold a BA degree in Art and Design and decided to continue my education by taking classes at the Chicago Art Institute and privately with professional artists. The Batik method was always my main focus. I begin a painting by rendering images in hot wax using a traditional tjaunting tool. I then alternate layers of 400-degree hot wax and watercolor paint on a rice paper surface. When complete all wax is carefully lifted off revealing layers of images. I am constantly pushing the limits of this unforgiving medium. My subjects range from floral to landscapes to abstracted shapes in bold bright colors. My current work is more abstracted and involves saving the remains of the original piece by ironing off a reverse of the original, for a beautiful monochromatic and peaceful contemporary feel.
I have met some wonderful people, artists, clients, and those who have encouraged me and allowed me to be who I am and enjoy what I do. From the show producers, art guilds, and organizations, and to all my art admirers, and to those closest to me thank you for allowing me to travel down this path.
