My Story | Judith Freeman
Where do my ideas come from? That’s a good question. For me, ideas are like a set of marbles on a Parcheesi game.
Many artists will say that they are inspired by nature. For me, from the moment when I went to my first zoo, I was hooked on animals. My first trip to an aquarium was earth shattering, so much so that my husband and I went for scuba certification. After we received our certifications we went back to Cozumel for scuba and continued to go back for several years.
That is how the fish get into the mix. Back shortly after our trip to Cozumel, Mexico, our first time on a snorkeling excursion and we saw some incredible varieties of fish. When we returned home I felt like I absolutely had to create a fish. We’ve been diving from the Caribbean all the way to Bora Bora. We’ve seen species of fish that you can only see in one part of the world. And I bring those fish to my sculptures.
But I also make cats! It wasn’t a random thing where I said a lot of people are making cats so I should as well. It was the fact that we had 4 cats, each with their own individual personality. Observing our cats gave me my inspiration and the majority of cats that I create are singing because I always imagined that our 4 cats were singing. They were very vocal.
Making something that comes from our brain cells, a spark, an inspiration, a domino is an honor. The human connection is what makes handmade, original art special. And, the one thing that bonds that connection is the story.
